Pre-Writing

Pre-writing is the process of preparing to write a novel and includes tasks such as crafting characters, outlining, researching, and establishing story elements such as setting and theme.

The extent to which a writer chooses to pre-write their stories can vary wildly, depending on whether (and how much) pre-writing helps a writer craft their best first draft. Discovering the pre-writing process that’s right for you can take time and exploration, as can learning how to develop an effective story.

Below, you’ll find links to the articles I’ve written on various aspects of the pre-writing process, including links to the characterization, story structure, and story element categories where I share additional guidance.
